Yoga Abroad
Within Canada…
Ashtanga Yoga Halifax – Halifax, Nova Scotia
I took my first yoga class from Jody Manley of Ashtanga Yoga Halifax. Jody teaches at “The Shed”, her own cozy yoga space that I’ve missed ever since leaving Halifax.
Sattva Yoga Shala – Montreal, Quebec
Mark and Joanne Darby are two of Canada’s “original” Ashtangis, certified by Pattabhi Jois. While they are often away from the studio teaching abroad, the other instructors at Sattva leave nothing to be desired. I never let a trip to Montreal pass by without a stop by Sattva.
Ashtanga Yoga Victoria – Victoria, British Columbia
I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff and Harmony Lichty in June 2012. I left the shala each day feeling better than the day before. The space is peaceful and welcoming, while the teaching is meticulous yet non-dogmatic, balancing the work of the practice with a flexible approach that caters to individual needs.
Across the Pond…
I’ve been fortunate to practice yoga in both Australia and India. As I continue to travel, I will update this section to feature the shalas and instructors I encounter abroad.
Yoga Moves – Sydney, Australia
Eileen Hall was my first Mysore style instructor. Thanks to her gentle approach and encouraging manner, I’ve been hooked on Mysore ever since that first class in 2004.
Purple Valley Yoga Retreat Centre – Goa, India
Purple Valley brings together world-class Ashtanga instructors with a setting unlike any other. I came to Purple Valley in February 2011 to study with Petri Raisanen of Ashtanga Yoga Helsinki . To learn more about my experience there, visit my blog.
Yoga Bones – Goa, India
Rolf and Marci Naujokat teach in Candolim, an area of Goa located right on the beach where hundreds of yogis from around the globe flock each year in search of the unparalleled instruction this couple provides. For more on Rolf and Marci, take a peek at my blog.
